Coca to the lake

Fly from Quito to Coca and board a covered motorboat at La Misión dock for two hours down the Napo — box lunch on the way, herons and kingfishers off the bow. At the lodge dock you transfer to a paddle canoe for a final two hours up a narrow creek. No engine, no noise: this is where most people first understand where they are.

Day 2
Clay lick and the Añangu community

An early breakfast and an hour on the water to reach the most accessible parrot clay lick in Ecuador, timed to arrive before the birds do, between 7:30 and 8:30. Later, a forest trail to the Kichwa community of Añangu to spend time with a family at their own work — and lunch at the Napo Cultural Center alongside them.

Day 3
Canopy tower and terra firme

Thirty minutes from the lodge, a twelve-storey tower carries you up through the layers of the forest and out at the crown of a huge ceiba. Afternoon on a terra firme trail — lizards, manakins, and if the day is generous, the endemic golden-mantled tamarin. Dugout canoe on the creeks before dinner.

Back down the creek

A last paddle out at first light, when the giant otters and the monk saki monkeys are most active, then the motorboat back to Coca for the Quito flight.

Who this trip is not for

We would rather lose the booking than sell you the wrong week. These are the reasons people come back from this itinerary disappointed, and all of them are predictable before you pay.

Anyone who needs to be reachable

There is no mobile signal and the internet, where it exists at all, is a satellite connection shared by the lodge. If your work cannot lose four days, this is not the week to do it.

Anyone expecting big animals on demand

This is dense primary rainforest. You will hear far more than you see, and a jaguar sighting is a lifetime event, not an itinerary item. The people who love it are the ones who came for birds, insects and the sound.

Anyone who dislikes small boats and early mornings

You reach the lodge by a two-hour motor canoe and then a paddled dugout, and the best wildlife hours are before seven. Both are non-negotiable parts of the trip.
